Worktops in Trowbridge
Trowbridge has been Wiltshire’s county town since 1889. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries it was the leading woollen cloth town in the south-west, nicknamed “the Manchester of the West”, with more than 20 cloth factories by 1820. The last mill closed in 1982. Today the town’s homes range from mill-era streets to estates built in the last few years, and we fit quartz, granite, porcelain and marble worktops in all of them.
Victorian homes in Newtown
The Newtown conservation area protects a district of mostly Victorian houses. Kitchens in older terraces tend to have their own quirks: walls that are not quite square, chimney breasts, and a route in through the front door and along the hall. Templating records the room exactly as it is, so the stone fits, and telling us about access in advance lets us plan how each piece comes in.
New homes at Ashton Park
Wiltshire Council granted outline planning permission in 2025 for up to 2,500 homes at Ashton Park, south-east of the town, with construction expected to start in 2026. If you are buying a new home here or elsewhere in Trowbridge:
- Ask the developer what worktop options are offered, and when you can choose them.
- Stone can only be templated once the kitchen units are installed and level.
- If you would rather choose your own stone after moving in, the builder-fitted worktops can be replaced on the same units.
- Check the terms of any new-home warranty before altering the kitchen.
Choosing a material
Hard water is common across this area, and limescale builds up around taps and sinks. Quartz, granite and porcelain are all practical choices with a simple wipe-down routine. Marble suits a kitchen where looks come first, with a little more care. Compare them in our material guide.
Trowbridge worktop questions
Do you fit worktops in new homes at Ashton Park?
Yes, as homes there are completed and occupied. The worktops can only be templated once the units are installed, so if you are buying new, ask the developer about worktop options first, and talk to us if you would rather choose your own stone after you move in.
Do I need permission to change worktops in the Newtown conservation area?
Conservation-area controls mainly concern the outside of buildings, and replacing kitchen worktops does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: works that affect their historic fabric can need consent. If you are unsure, ask Wiltshire Council.
